The mailed edition
The record survives
because someone kept it.
Almost everything we know about the last eighty years of this art, we know because somebody printed it and somebody else kept it. Newsy Vents, Dialogue, Distant Voices and the rest went out in the mail, got read, and got put in a drawer. Decades later they are still there, and they are the reason there is a history to preserve at all.
Those newsletters are gone now. The Institute is digitizing what survives, page by page, and building the one that comes next.
A digital newsletter is read and gone. A printed one gets kept. That is the whole argument for bringing it back, and it is why the mailed edition is part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

The mailed edition is billed annually rather than monthly, because an issue that has already gone in the post cannot come back. The difference covers printing and postage, and international rates will be set by region once we know where members are.

Before you join.
Do I have to be a professional ventriloquist?
No. WAV welcomes beginners, working performers, hobbyists, figure makers, collectors, and enthusiasts. If you love ventriloquism, you belong in the conversation.
Can I join from outside the United States?
Yes. This is a worldwide association, and the newsletter, online sessions, chats, and the digital Membership Seal are designed for members everywhere. Physical-item shipping details will be published before enrollment opens.
When does membership open?
We’re working toward an early 2027 opening alongside the first full wave of spotlights and the archive. Join the interest list below for launch details, the program schedule, and enrollment information.
Will there be a printed newsletter?
Yes. Bringing the mailed newsletter back is part of the point. Indicative pricing is $180 a year in the United States and $240 internationally, both including the digital edition, against $120 for digital only. The mailed edition is annual rather than monthly. These figures will be confirmed before enrollment opens, and how many we print depends on how many of you ask for it on the interest form.
Where can I use the Membership Seal?
Active members receive the WAV Membership Seal for websites, social profiles, business cards, and other promotional materials, with simple usage guidelines. It shows clients and bookers that you belong to a recognized professional body.
Do I need to use Discord?
No. The live sessions and Q&A run on video calls that work in any browser, and everything important also reaches you by email. The WAV Discord is there for members who want to keep talking between sessions. Join it if you like it, ignore it if you don’t.
Is my spotlight included in membership?
You can submit your story for a spotlight whether or not you join WAV. Membership adds education, conversation, and member perks. The public archive and spotlights remain available to everyone.
Am I buying a membership by joining this list?
No. This is an interest list. There is no payment, reservation fee, or membership activation. We’ll email you when enrollment opens so you can decide then.
